Anyone can volunteer at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers facilities: Scout units, civic organizations, local businesses, youth centers, school groups, retirees and more . All of these volunteers assist us in building and maintaining our recreational facilities as well as developing natural areas where animals and plants can thrive.

January 4, 2020: Christmas Bird Count

On Saturday, 6 January 2020, Park Ranger Kyle Watter hosted the second annual Proctor Lake Christmas Bird Count. Sixteen volunteers from across Texas met at the lake office at 0700 to count birds located on and near project lands.  Volunteers surveyed until 1800, encountering 19000 individual birds representing 98 unique species. Several volunteers participated last year, and many new volunteers came from the surrounding communities. The 120-year-old Christmas Bird Count is the longest-running world-wide citizen science monitoring program, and provides critical data for natural resources management programs.

June 28-29, 2019: Proctor Lake Clean-up.

The Proctor Lake clean-up was a great success! Thank you to all that showed up to help clean up the park.

March 23, 2019: Copperas Creek Park Tree Planting.

Proctor Lake rangers put on a Tree Planting Day in Copperas Creek Park. All of Proctor’s long-term volunteers attended, as well as ten students from Tarleton State University attended, and two master naturalists. This big project was an all-day event but with so much help the job was able to get done safely. The group planted 120 trees in Copperas Creek Park which will bring much needed shade to our visitors for many years.

December 30, 2018: Proctor Lake Christmas Bird Count.

Proctor Lake staff and twenty-three volunteers completed the first annual Proctor Lake Christmas Bird Count, a new partnership with the Audubon Society’s century-old surveying program.  The program saw eight teams of birders compete to observe and identify as many birds as possible in one day around the Proctor Lake project.  Volunteers and USACE staff collectively counted 9,405 individual birds representing 99 unique species across thirty-eight families.  Between all eight teams, participants surveyed 220.7 miles over 57.97 hours.  This program greatly improved USACE staff’s understanding of the resources, both avian and human, surrounding the project, refining natural resources management objectives and practices while creating new and valuable relationships with individual birders and local, state, and national birding and naturalist organizations.
