Recreation at Somerville Lake

Rocky Creek Park , Yegua Creek Park , are developed US Army Corps of Engineers parks. Pecan Lake Park and McCain Park (located west of Rocky Creek Park)are undeveloped US Army Corps of Engineers parks. There are two State Parks units with campgrounds (Nails Creek Unit and Birch Creek Unit) , two marina campgrounds (Big Creek Park/Marina and Overlook Park/Lake Somerville Marina) , and a City of Somerville campground (Welch Park) . Developed parks have campsites with picnic tables, grills, available water, rest rooms, showers, and most have shelter-tops. Electricity is extra. Year round camping is available. Two private floating marinas Big Creek Marina and Lake Somerville Marina and 11 boat ramps provide plenty of lake access for water recreation. Rocky Creek and Yegua Creek Parks have playgrounds. Rocky Creek Park and Yegua Creek Park each have a nature trail, approximately three (3) mile and (1) mile, respectively, which affords visitors the opportunity to exercise, study and enjoy the beauty of nature. The State Parks Units offer a more developed 7.5 mile long nature trail and 21.6 mile long hiking trail. The 21.6 mile trail connects the Birch Creek Unit and Nails Creek Unit and serves as a hiking/biking and equestrian trail. Somerville Lake also offers various types of hunting including waterfowl and feral hogs , as well as deer hunting for challenged hunters . Fishing is another favorite recreational item of visitors at Somerville Lake. Somerville Lake has an abundant supply of various types of fish , but is mostly know for its catfish. Other forms of recreation include, boating, water skiing, sailing, photography and birdwatching.
