History of Somerville Lake

Authorized by Congress in the Flood Control Act of September 3, 1954 (Public Law 780, 83rd Congress, 2nd Session), the project was designed to provide flood control, water conservation, and other beneficial uses for the surrounding area. Somerville Lake was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and is operated under the immediate supervision of the District Engineer, Fort Worth District. Construction of Somerville Lake began in June 1962 and deliberate impoundment of water began in January 1967. Federal cost of the project was approximately $23,700,000.
