Cooper Wildlife Management Area

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department manage the Cooper Wildlife Management Area (WMA) under a license agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Cooper WMA is located in Delta and Hopkins Counties, and covers approximately 9500 acres of land surrounding the Jim Chapman Lake and 4700 acres of flooded timber. The objectives of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department on the Cooper WMA are to maintain and manage healthy, native wildlife populations and their habitats. The 4 major habitat types on the WMA are Black land Prairie, Upland Post Oaks, Bottomland Hardwoods, and a variety of wetlands.

Cooper WMA is open year-round for public use. Recreational opportunities for visitors include bird watching, hiking, wildlife viewing, photography, fishing, and hunting. Public hunting is permitted for white-tailed deer, feral hogs, dove, quail, woodcock, gallinules, rails, snipe, waterfowl, rabbits, hares, and squirrels. The Cooper wetland system is a premier waterfowl production area in northeast Texas.

This WMA is day use only, and visitors must register at designated access points. Camping is available at the nearby Doctor's Creek (903-395-3100) and South Sulphur (903-945-5256) State Parks.
