Ray Roberts Lake Public Hunting Lands

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department manages the Ray Roberts Lake Public Hunting Lands (PHL) under a license agreement with the United States Army Corps of Engineers. The Ray Roberts PHL, located in Denton, Cooke, and Grayson counties, covers approximately 40,850 total acres consisting of lake water surface, upland areas, wetlands and flooded timber areas. The objectives of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department for the Ray Roberts PHL is to maintain native wildlife populations and habitats. The 4 major habitat types on the Ray Roberts PHL are Blackland Prairie, Upland Post Oaks, Bottomland Hardwoods, and a variety of wetlands.

Ray Roberts PHL is open year-round for public use. Recreational opportunities for visitors include boating, swimming, bird watching, hiking, wildlife viewing, photography, fishing, and hunting. Public hunting is permitted for feral hogs, dove, quail, woodcock, gallinules, rails, snipe, waterfowl, frogs, rabbits, hares, and squirrels. An Annual Public Hunting (APH) permit, formally known as the Type II permit must be purchased in order to hunt these lands. The Ray Roberts PHL includes a management area that is designated as a waterfowl sanctuary located on the Northwest side of Ray Roberts Lake, in which no waterfowl hunting is allowed. The Ray Roberts PHL is a day use only with no entrance fees. Camping is available at nearby Texas Parks and Wildlife Parks; Johnson Branch, (940)637-2294, and Isle Du Bois, (940)686-2148, State Parks. Ray Roberts Lake currently has one marina, the lake Ray Roberts Marina, (940)458-7343.
