JOHNSON CREEK PARK

Johnson Creek Recreation Area at Lake O’ the Pines is a highly developed multi-use park located at the north shore of Lake O’ the Pines, just off FM 729.  The recreation area provides day-use, group and overnight camping facilities.  The campground is open year around.

CAMPING AREA

Johnson Creek Campground provides developed campsites for recreational vehicles and tent campers with electricity and water.  There are less developed areas specifically for tent camping without electricity.  Campsites may be available on a first come/first serve basis, but campsites may be reserved in advance by contacting the National Recreation Reservation Serviceä.  In addition, the Group Camping Area with a pavilion may be reserved at the project office.

There are 22 campsites in the tent camping areas.  These campsites are located in wooded areas and are suitable for campers with tents only.  Each site includes a tent pad, picnic table, fire ring, lantern pole and access to a trash receptacle.  Sites 08-12 in Tent Area 1 are “walk-in only” sites within 50-150 feet of parking areas.  All sites in Tent Area T2 have electricity hook-ups.  Potable water hydrants are located with both tent areas.  A fee is charged for these campsites.

There are 63 campsites in the campground designated for recreational vehicle camping.  The reservable Group Camping Area has 12 additional RV sites.  Campsites for RVs have hard surfaced pads primarily for use by camper type vehicles or trailers, although some of these campsites have tent pads and will accommodate both RVs and/or tents.  Each campsite provides a picnic table, fire ring, lantern pole, water hydrant, electrical connection, and access to a trash receptacle.  A fee is charged for these campsites.

A RV dump station is located near the entrance of the campground for disposal of sewage and gray water.

Five restroom facilities are provided for the above camping areas.  Each restroom has flush toilets.  Four of the facilities are classified as washhouses and have showers in addition to toilets.

A lifetime Golden Age Passport entitles those persons 62 years of age or older to a 50 percent reduction in federal recreation fees.  A Golden Access Passport is available to disabled persons entitling them to a 50 percent reduction in federal recreation fees.  These permits are issued during regular business hours, 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., at the Project Office located near the dam or at another federal recreation area office.

DAY USE AREAS

Day-use facilities at Johnson Creek Recreation Area include individual picnic sites with picnic tables and cooking grills, a multi-lane concrete boat ramp with courtesy dock, a fishing pier, a protected swimming area, an amphitheater, and a sand volleyball court.  A restroom facility with flush toilets is also provided in this area.  A fee is charged for the day-use of the park.  A group pavilion may be rented by making a reservation at the Project Office located near the dam.  The pavilion has picnic tables, a covered cooking grill, and electricity.  Reserving the amphitheater is free, but it requires a special event permit from the Project Office.

SWIMMING

Two designated protected swimming areas with beaches are found at the Johnson Creek Recreation Area.  One is located in the Day Use Area for the general public and the other is located in the Campground for overnight visitors.  Swimming should be limited to those areas.  There are no lifeguards provided and swimming is at the user’s own risk.

FISHING

A floating fishing pier is provided in the Day Use Area.  This facility is for fishing only.  No mooring of boats or swimming is allowed from this pier.

BOATING

Johnson Creek Recreation Area has two multi-lane concrete launching ramps.  One ramp is located in the Day Use Area for use by the general public and the other is located in the Campground for use by overnight campers.  The Lake O’ the Pines brochure of the reservoir should be consulted for identification of cleared areas suitable for water skiing and high speed boating.  Boaters should beware that original tree lines and above surface stumps decay and recede below the water’s surface creating hazards that are not readily visible.  Boat lanes within the wooded portion of the reservoir are not completely free of obstructions and are marked for accessibility only.  Always proceed with caution because lakes are constantly changing.

SECURITY

Access into the campground is through a controlled gate attendant station.  A gate attendant will be on duty between the hours of 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.  Between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. the entrance gate will be closed.  The attendant will be available should an emergency arise.  Uniformed park rangers make periodic patrols through the campgrounds and day-use areas.  Visitor protection is provided by the Marion County Sheriff’s Department Lake Patrol.
