Feral Hog Hunting at Somerville Lake
Over the past five years, feral hogs have become an ever increasing problem around Somerville Lake. Feral hogs are a nuisance animal and are notorious for the amount of destruction that they can cause. They have created numerous problems out at Somerville Lake including but not limited too; habitat loss, property damage, loss of wildlife, and are a constant safety concern for the general public. In the past five years the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has gradually created a feral hog hunting program to help rid the lake area of this nuisance animal. Feral hog hunting is allowed by permit only . Hunters wishing to hunt may either click on the link below to fill out an application (must mail in or drop off at the Somerville Lake office ) or come by the Somerville Lake office to fill out an application. Once the hunter has filled out an application, they will be placed in a random drawing to be selected for open hunting areas. If the hunter is selected they will be notified by phone or mail and will be required to come in and fill out a permit for the selected area. Permits usually last (3) three months with the option to extend another (3) months after the expiration of the first permit.
There are several methods in which hunters are allowed to remove hogs, these include; bowhunting, livetrapping, shotgun hunting, and dogs.
