Proctor Lake Hunting

 

*** Please remember that anyone hunting on federal property MUST wear 400 square inches of daylight florescent orange with 144 square inches appearing on both chest and back, and daylight florescent orange headwear must be worn. Hunters are allowed to take off daylight florescent orange gear ONLY when actively hunting at a fixed location.

*** If you were issued a hunting permit for the previous hunting season and you do not turn in a Hunting Survey you WILL NOT receive a hunting permit for the following hunting season.

Proctor hunting program offers two (2) types of hunting permits: Migratory Game bird hunting permit (waterfowl and dove) and the General hunting permit (feral hog and small game). These permits grant the holder and up to two (2) guest access to the Sabana and Upper Leon Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). Hunting restrictions and guidelines are expressed on the permit or in the Proctor Lake Hunting Policy. All other State and Federal hunting Restrictions and Regulations APPLY.

Applications for the 2017-2018 season can be mailed to Proctor Lake Office located at 2180 HWY 2861, Comanche, TX 76442. Applications can be obtained online or at the Proctor Lake Office. Permits will be issued between the first Monday of June until the last Friday in August, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday excluding federal holidays. No permits will be issued after the last Friday in August. All hunters must submit the hunting survey by the end of May, 2018 to be eligible for a hunting permit the following hunting season. Starting in 2018 All applicants that wish to apply MUST do so in person at the Proctor Lake Office.

 

 

 

Hunting Applications and Permits

 

Migratory Game bird hunting permit is for migratory game bird hunting within the boundaries of the WMAs. Migratory Game bird hunting permits are not required to hunt on the main lake hunting areas. Permit holders and up to two (2) guests must comply with all Proctor Lake, State, and Federal hunting regulations. Applicants must show proof of valid driver’s License or State issued identification card and must be 17 years old or older. Applicants must show proof of hunter education or be exempt (born before Sept. 2, 1971. Guests must be within normal voice control of permit holder at all times.  All license requirements, seasons, and bag limits are identified by Texas Parks and Wildlife and the US Fish and Wildlife Service for Comanche County. Applicants that wish to apply MUST do so in person. Applications can be obtained at the Proctor Lake Office beginning the first Monday of June or using the Migratory Game bird hunting permit link below.

General hunting permit is for feral hog, squirrel, and rabbit hunting ONLY, within the boundaries of the WMAs. General hunting season at Proctor is from February 1st through August 31st. Permit holders and up to two (2) guests must comply with all Proctor Lake, State, and Federal hunting regulations. Applicants must show proof of valid driver’s License or State issued identification card and must be 17 years old or older. Applicants must show proof of hunter education or be exempt (born before Sept. 2, 1971). Guests must be within normal voice control of permit holder at all times. .  All license requirements, seasons, and bag limits are identified by Texas Parks and Wildlife and the US Fish and Wildlife Service for Comanche County. Migratory Game Bird hunting in the main lake hunting areas does not require a Proctor Lake hunting permit, hunting within the WMAs is by permit only. The number of permits will be based on the hunting areas capacity for a safe, enjoyable, quality, and most of all sustainable hunting experience for the public. Seasons and bag limits are identified by Proctor Lake Hunting Policy, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and US Fish and Wildlife for Comanche County. All hunters must have a valid driver’s License or State issued identification card, proof of hunter education training course or be exempt (born before Sept. 2, 1971), and comply with all Federal and Texas hunting license requirements, and/or a valid Proctor Lake Hunting Permit. No permits will be issued after the last Friday in August. All hunters must submit the hunting survey by the end of May, 2018 to be eligible for a hunting permit the following hunting season.

Special Restrictions:

·         All hunters and anyone accompanying the hunter on federal property MUST wear 400 square inches of daylight florescent orange with 144 square inches appearing on both chest and back, and daylight florescent orange headwear must be worn. Hunters are allowed to take off daylight florescent orange gear ONLY when actively hunting at a fixed location.

·         Hunting in the Lower Leon Wildlife Management Area (below the dam) is prohibited.

·         Hunting is allowed year round. Specific hunting seasons and regulations are published by Proctor Lake Hunting Policy, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and the US Fish and Wildlife Service.

·         Proctor General hunting season (feral hog and small game) is from February 1st through August 31st.

·         All State and Federal hunting restrictions and regulations apply.

·         Deer, Turkey, and Upland Game birds are not allowed to be harvested.

·         The use of archery and crossbows are allowed (refer to TPWD for guidelines).

·         The use of slugs for the harvesting of feral hogs is allowed.

·         Sabana and Upper Leon Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) hunting is by permit only.

·         The use of dogs for chasing and capture is prohibited.

·         Target shooting is prohibited on government property.

·         Hunting blinds must be completely removed from the land or water upon completion of each hunting day. All blinds must have the hunter’s name, date of installation, address, and phone number written legibly and placed at the entry point of the blind in a conspicuous location.  If proper identification is not present, the structure may be impounded and/or removed.

·         Carrying a handgun or rifle of any kind on US Army Corps of Engineers Property is prohibited under Title 36 CFR, regardless of the user’s activity, hunting permit, or Concealed Handgun License status. 

 

 

Main Lake Hunting

  • Migratory game bird hunting within the main lake hunting areas is allowed and is not permit required.

·         Hunters must comply with all Proctor Lake, State, and Federal license, seasons, bag limits, and shooting times.

  • Dogs are allowed to aid hunters retrieving downed migratory game birds.
